Messe an Ordinary Day
Messe an Ordinary Day
In 1994, Messe un jour ordinaire intersected the vehement and shattering words of the mass with those, individual and derisory, of Laurence, a young drug addict who appeared in a documentary by Jean-Michel Carré. The meeting with Les Métaboles choir and l'Ensemble Multilatérale, both conducted by Léo Warynski, persuaded its composer, Bernard Cavanna, to rewrite this iconoclastic mass to reinforce the presence of the voice and the choir.
A maze of voices and languages with incomparable dramatic, vocal and musical power, his words resonate even more within our societies, which are more withdrawn and globalized than ever.
The program combines this secular mass by Bernard Cavanna with works for a cappella choir by Francis Poulenc: Un Soir de Neige on the texts of Eluard and Quatre motets pour un temps de Pénitence... These two works share with the mass a common intensity and humanity. Monk and rogue, two adjectives that Francis Poulenc had attributed to himself, and which could just as well describe the universe of Bernard Cavanna...
